Offering international investment products to non-U.S. customers has been a steadily growing business for the last 20 years. Initially the business model was only for firms who could make a substantial investment into building a successful global model. We often hear that globalization requires a certain amount of scale. This may still hold true but the investment requirement has decreased as the number of companies entering this space has increased. The investment is now affordable to companies that do not necessarily have large budgets.
However, the increased number of firms offering their products in a global market introduced other challenges that we can solve. First, countries that have become central providers for these types of products have increased regulatory oversight and substance requirements. Understanding, navigating, and managing these relationships can be time consuming and is often times outsourced to legal firms. Their advice often does not address many of the key operational challenges associated with conducting business in a foreign host country.
Second, the number of critical vendors and suppliers has greatly increased within these host countries. Knowing which provider to collaborate with has a direct impact on the success of your business.
Third, growth in the number of companies offering international products limits product shelf space. Having the ability to position your product appropriately offers the best chance of success.
